Indonesia Travel Warning Is Lifted

The State Department earlier this month lifted its Indonesia travel warning, which advised Americans to defer “nonessential travel” to the Asian nation after political violence erupted there in May. While noting that unrest has subsided, the State Department advised Americans to “avoid areas where violence has been reported, avoid crowds and disturbances, and exercise prudence and caution.” It also advised against hailing taxis on the street. Bali has had some demonstrations, but its major tourist areas have not been affected by violence. Nevertheless, the island’s tourist industry has been hard hit, with occupancy at some hotels reportedly dropping to 30% or lower. Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton are among luxury Bali resorts that have reduced room rates or are offering special room packages.
