The Center for Research on Information Technology and Organizations at the UC Irvine Graduate School of Management has won a grant to house a National Science Foundation research center focusing on the social and economic impact of digital data. The UCI researchers said they hope to merge academic research and real-life corporate experience with the grant.

“This is really the first time there’s been such a strong industry and scientific push behind this kind of research,” said Kenneth Kraemer, director of the center, which will receive $2.5 million over five years from the National Science Foundation, the university and several private corporate donors.

As the federal government’s primary funding agency for individual scientists, the National Science Foundation is leading a 10-year effort to create and support a series of research centers that will focus on high-tech issues.
