Cardinal Awaits Apology for Photo
While supporters of Councilman Richard Alarcon and former Assemblyman Richard Katz continued to exchange accusations over campaign tactics in the San Fernando Valley’s state Senate race, another controversy was still unresolved Monday.
On election day, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony castigated Alarcon for sending out a campaign mailer that featured a photo of Mahony administering Holy Communion to Alarcon in church.
Mahony said the mailer incorrectly implied that he endorsed Alarcon. Mahony also asked Alarcon to never use a photo of him in any future campaign literature.
Alarcon responded by promising to apologize, but Mahony’s spokesman, Father Gregory Coiro, said as of Monday, three weeks after the election, Alarcon had yet to contact the cardinal.
Alarcon’s chief of staff, Annette Castro, said Alarcon tried to call Mahony after the election, but could not reach the cardinal. She said he will try again.
