At a celebratory dinner Sunday, 54 students will receive scholarships ranging from $200 to $1,000 from a group promoting education and environmentalism, officials said.
For a fifth year, Mothers of East L.A.--Santa Isabel will award scholarships to high school students from throughout Los Angeles County, said project Director Elsa Lopez.
Recipients were chosen on the basis of a completed application, essay, proof of enrollment in school and letter of recommendation, Lopez said. A total of $20,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded.
The eight recipients of the group's annual Unsung Heroes Awards will also be announced Sunday.
Winners are honored for their commitment to the education and well-being of young people.
The awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on the playground of Santa Isabel Elementary School, 2424 Whittier Blvd.
