The U.S. national women’s team beat the Czech Republic, 18-3, to advance to the semifinals of the Yugoslavia Women’s Invitational Water Polo tournament in Pancevo, Yugoslavia.

In an earlier game Friday, the U.S. defeated Yugoslavia, 9-3. On Thursday, Huntington Beach’s Robin Beauregard scored a goal during an 8-3 U.S. victory over Great Britain.

The United States men’s national water polo team meets Yugoslavia at 4 p.m. today at Corona del Mar High in the final game of a three-game exhibition series.

The U.S. lost to Yugoslavia, 5-3, Friday at Belmont Plaza.

Chase Exon of Irvine and Melissa Esmero of Huntington Beach advanced to today’s finals of the Southern California Junior Sectionals at Los Caballeros Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

Exon beat Ryan Haymond of Bakersfield, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the boys’ 18s semifinals. Esmero beat Andrea Yung of San Marino, 6-3, 6-0, in the girls’ 16s.

Young Nam of Fullerton closed with a four-under 68 and Steve Runge of Mission Viejo shot a final-round 69 to tie for sixth at the California State Open at the Indian Wells Resort.

Todd Demsey of Scottsdale, Ariz. shot a nine-under 63 to win the event with a tournament record total of 26-under 262. Demsey won $15,000.

Nam and Runge were 16-under and each won $1,833. Joon Lee of Fullerton shot a 70 and finished at 10-under, winning $1,025.

Brian Foster of Huntington Beach won the bicycle stunt dirt jumping competition at the X-Games in San Diego. Cory Nastazio of Huntington Beach finished seventh in the event.
