EUROPE UBER ALLES

Is Berti Vogts ever happy?

The curmudgeon who coaches Germany’s no-nonsense national team has a new complaint about the World Cup: Not enough teams from Europe.

“Europe are the great winners of this tournament. FIFA should think about the number of teams from Europe,” Vogts says, advising FIFA to take automatic berths away from Asia and Africa.

“Asia are losers here and Africa is the big loser here. I think 16 teams from Europe would be appropriate.”

Vogts might not have checked recently, but Europe sent 15 teams to this World Cup. Ten of them advanced to the second round.

Would trading Portugal for Tunisia have made this a better tournament?

Maybe, if it would have caused Vogts to stop griping for a half-hour or two.
