Envoy Confirmed Dead in Plane Crash
Ivory Coast announced that U.N. special envoy Alioune Blondin Beye had died in a plane crash near its commercial capital, Abidjan. A government statement said there were no survivors among seven other people, including two crew, traveling with Beye when the plane crashed in mangrove swamps Friday night on a flight from Lome, Togo. Beye, 59, was a respected diplomat from Mali. He was on a shuttle mission to African capitals to gain support for a bid to avert renewed bloodshed in Angola, where he had been special envoy since 1993.
