IN PRAISE OF WATFORD

Share

Last Sunday’s reference to Nick Leeson’s hometown of Watford really drew my ire (“Trading Places,” by David Gritten). This is the town where I was born and raised and incidentally met and married a GI stationed there in 1945.

Far from being “dolorous” and “unlovely,” it is a prosperous town with many amenities, one being Cassiobury Park, the former estate of the Earl of Essex, frequently visited by Elizabeth I and one of the loveliest parks in England.

I might add it is also the hometown of Elton John, who I believe would take umbrage at Gritten’s unflattering view of Watford. All towns have a downside, including the picky gentleman’s abode of London, unless of course he is fortunate enough to reside in Utopia.
