Oxnard Police Chief Harold Hurtt is one of nine finalists for the job of Phoenix police chief, officials said Wednesday.

A Phoenix citizens committee has narrowed the initial pool of 24 applicants to a list that includes five officers already with the department and four outsiders--Hurtt and the police chiefs of San Jose, Albuquerque, and Newark, N.J., Phoenix officials said.

Hurtt spent 24 years with the Phoenix Police Department before coming to Oxnard in 1992. He was unavailable for comment Wednesday, but some in Phoenix City Hall have said he has the inside track.

Hurtt has said he plans to resign as Oxnard police chief and move to Arizona regardless of the outcome of his bid to become the top cop in his former hometown. His wife has taken a job as director of a foster-care program there.

Hurtt is scheduled for an interview in Phoenix next week, officials said. The Phoenix city manager is expected to pick the new chief in early April.
