Confronting a Boss About Shortcomings

Share

Q: I am an independent contractor who works three days a week in a large manufacturing facility with a manager who has poor interpersonal skills.

His response for almost any question is, “No,” sometimes before the question is asked. Should I confront him on his shortcomings?

The other workers have come to me and asked me to say something, because they think he respects me.

A: A straightforward talk with this manager might do some good, but you need to consider the pros and cons of such a confrontation. For example, would it damage your working relationship with him?

If you decide to have the discussion, be tactful and assure the manager that you are trying to provide constructive feedback that might benefit him. He may be more receptive to what you have to say.
