Mitchell Signs Contract With Oakland

Kevin Mitchell, the 1989 National League MVP, signed a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics and is expected to join workouts today. . . . Bret Saberhagen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner attempting a comeback after shoulder surgery, gave up one hit and two walks in three innings against Toronto and left with a 2-1 lead. Boston won, 6-3, but Saberhagen didn’t get the win. It’s been 2 1/2 years since he has had a victory.
