Fraud Sentencing Delayed for Doctor in UCI Clinic Scandal

Share

Dr. Sergio Stone, one of the doctors involved in UC Irvine’s fertility clinic scandal, will be sentenced next month for fraudulently billing insurance companies.

The sentencing, which had been scheduled for today in federal court, was postponed until April 13 because of attorney scheduling conflicts.

Stone was one of three partners involved in an international scandal stemming from allegations that human eggs and embryos were implanted in other women without the owners’ consent. No charges have been filed against any of the doctors in connection with those allegations.

Although Stone faces a possible five-year sentence for nine counts of fraud, federal prosecutors have said they will seek a sentence of one year. In return, Stone has promised that he will not appeal his conviction or seek a new trial. A jury acquitted him on 14 other charges, including tax evasion and conspiracy.

He remains free on a $3-million bond.
