Black Women Focus of CSUN Conference

The fourth annual Black Women’s Conference, called “The Ideal Black Woman: Today, Tomorrow and Beyond,” will be held at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.

The all-day event, sponsored by the university’s Black Student Union and the Black Women’s Conference Committee, aims to enhance the lives of black women, said LeiLani Lemle, director of programming for the conference.

“I think it’s going to be a day of unity, a day of inspiration and a day for the community to gather knowledge,” said Lemle, who is also a member of CSUN’s Black Student Union.

Jewel Diamond Taylor, author of “Sister Friends,” will present a keynote speech, Lemle said.

Actress Jennifer Lewis, who has appeared in the television sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and the movie “The Preacher’s Wife,” will perform a theatrical piece titled “From Billie To Lena,” a tribute to singers Billie Holiday and Lena Horne.

Highlights of the conference will include an African fashion show and workshops focusing on personal health, politics and relationships.

The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the University Student Union, on the east side of the Northridge campus.

Ticket prices, which include a continental breakfast and lunch, are $10 in advance and $18 at the door.
