A DGA Recount

There have been four times--not three--that the winner of the Directors Guild Award has not gone on to win the Oscar for best director (“Cameron Gets DGA Film Award,” March 8).

Anthony Harvey won the 1968 DGA Award for “The Lion in Winter,” yet Carol Reed got the Oscar for “Oliver!” Francis Ford Coppola took home the 1972 DGA for “The Godfather,” while Bob Fosse was awarded the Oscar for “Cabaret.” Steven Spielberg got the 1985 DGA for “The Color Purple,” but the academy gave the Oscar to Sydney Pollack for “Out of Africa.” Finally, Ron Howard won the 1995 DGA for “Apollo 13,” while Mel Gibson got the best director Oscar that year for “Braveheart.”
