* About UCLA: The Bruins’ late season has been all about Toby Bailey--who had 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the first-round victory over Miami--raising his game, and reviving his teammates in the final minutes. And if UCLA continues to get sporadic contributions from its freshman guards, especially Earl Watson, who has failed to score in double digits in 14 consecutive games, it will need Bailey to penetrate, rebound, play defense and basically rack up the statistics of several productive players. Bruin reserves played 30 minutes against Miami, scored no points and had three rebounds.

* About Michigan: Though it’s easy to get distracted by all the beef inside, the Wolverines’ successful stretch run is in large part a result of turned up defensive pressure and the shot-blocking and body-slamming abilities of Maceo Baston, Robert Traylor and reserve Josh Asselin. Michigan’s last seven opponents have scored 70 points or fewer. On the season, Wolverine opponents have made only 39.7% of their shots. Meanwhile, Robbie Reid and Travis Conlan help Michigan overcome its turnover tendencies, while Louis Bullock is a 47.2% three-point shooter. At one point, the Wolverines were 15-7, including losses to Eastern Michigan, Bradley and Minnesota.

* Keys to the game: The UCLA pattern hasn’t changed much this season--the seniors can lead the Bruins past lesser teams; but when the Bruins go up against teams with equal or more talent and they need to put together a cohesive plan of attack or lose, they usually lose. Michigan is so much stronger down low and so much more balanced, UCLA has to get perfect games out of J.R. Henderson (no foul trouble and being aggressive against Traylor), Bailey (again) and at least one other player (Baron Davis or Kris Johnson) just to keep it close. Either that or Coach Steve Lavin has to formulate a game plan that outmaneuvers Michigan. The perfect games are more likely.
