Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets Tuesday for the country’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade.

5th Avenue was lined with people, many of them wearing green hats and scarves and waving the flag of the Irish Republic for the parade, which, this year, marked the 200th anniversary of an unsuccessful 1798 Irish rebellion against British rule.

Inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York Cardinal John J. O’Connor began the day honoring Ireland’s patron saint with a Mass and an appeal for religious tolerance.

“The rebellion was about religious freedom for all. For all, the reason for which they died was for all Irishmen, without exception,” the cardinal said.
