If the names Stanley, Hooker, Universal and Harden turn you on, then you know high-quality traditional furniture. These are pricey names at most stores, but at Westside Furniture & Rugs you can relax; the prices are 34% to 65% lower than retail.
Owner Peter Wernicke, with more than 20 years’ experience in the furniture business, keeps his prices down by having an off-the-beaten-track location (formerly occupied by W.J. Sloane) and low overhead. He buys current merchandise or close-outs directly from the manufacturer.
Just about every item on the floor is a buy. A splendid entertainment center--not one of the humongous objects that are on so many showroom floors--in a matte cherry finish by Hooker sells at most stores for $1,695, but the tag here reads $875.
From Harden, a blue-and-white-print club chair is a stunning bargain, reduced from $1,195 to $299. A few leather pieces are well-priced; an oversized chair from Omni was priced to move fast at $399 (retail, $1,399). Wernicke is expanding his leather department, so you can expect more inventory in this area.
The traditionalist will love a handsome hall console in cherry with a marble inset that sells at many stores for $800 but can be found at Westside for $499.
The rug department is probably the best in town. One Chinese-design 100% wool rug in a floral pattern measuring slightly less than 4-by-5 feet is only $79. The selection of rugs is wide and the prices are excellent. Lovers of traditional and elegant home furnishings (and accessories) will appreciate this bargain source.
