Since he wasn’t doing anything this weekend, Kansas Coach Roy Williams was in the stands at Greensboro Coliseum for the East Regional games.

Williams’ son Scott, a reserve guard for North Carolina, played one minute in the Tar Heels’ victory over Michigan State.

Kansas was upset by Rhode Island in the second round of the Midwest Regional on Sunday.

“He’s taking it real hard,” Scott Williams said of Kansas’ loss. “He feels bad. You can only tell the players so much.”

After consecutive early departures from the NCAA tournament, Williams is is inheriting the “can’t win the big one” label that stuck to Dean Smith until 1982, when Smith won the first of two NCAA titles.

“I think he’ll enjoy being put in the same book as Coach Smith,” Scott Williams said.
