FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Top largemouth bass, a 14-pounder by Aaron Martins, Castaic, on an Optimum Swim Bait at lower lake. Guide Bob Crupi with Mark Martello and Marty Dolfuss, San Fernando Valley, 27 bass between 3 and 5 pounds on crawdads. Frank Jacobs, Sylmar, 13-pound striped bass, on a night crawler.

LAKE PIRU--The road to the lake is reportedly open, but call the marina at (805) 521-1231 to check on access.

PYRAMID LAKE--Drifting for striped bass from 10 to 40 feet is producing good results, mostly from the marina to Bear Trap, and other species are active as well. One group reported catching seven stripers totaling 30 pounds and 16 catfish totaling 98 pounds, on anchovies. Catfish remain the best bet, but there are some smallmouth and largemouth being caught as well.

LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass and trout both active; bass biting off flats and island and trout biting at east end on Needlefish lures. Steve Morris, Lompoc, 7-4 and 8-0 bass, on spinnerbaits at flats. John Stopp, Apple Valley, five bass totaling 22 pounds, largest 5-8, on unknown baits at Cachuma Bay.

LAKE CASITAS--Top bass, an 11-pounder by Ryan Socia, Santa Paula, on a Green Weenie. Todd Thigpin, Santa Paula, 10-0 and 8-4 bass, on Stocker Trout lure. Several limits of trout, most being caught on Needlefish lures fished on lead-core line. Red ear perch are getting active, particularly at Wadleigh Arm. Night crawlers getting most. The catfish bite has slowed.

CORONA LAKE--Conditions are finally prime for trout in the morning hours, with most anglers filling five-fish stringers after about two hours on the water. Top fish, a 14-7 by Vernon Weekly, Covina, on a white Roostertail at the south end near the brush. More trout were stocked Thursday and a load of catfish is expected today.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Trout action has slowed because of off-colored water. An 11-7 was caught on green Power Bait, but crappie jigs worked best in the murky water. Top catfish, a 10-4 by Sisouphanh Halapha, Anaheim, on mackerel at Catfish Lake.

IRVINE LAKE--The buzz is still about the lake-record 20.65-pound trout reportedly caught by a bass fisherman on a spinnerbait March 10. That sounds a bit fishy, but there are big trout biting in the lake, mostly 3- to 10-pounders that are being fooled by traditional trout baits. Catfish, however, will be in the spotlight Saturday during a promotional event from 5 to midnight, where cash prizes will be awarded and a yearlong pass will be issued to anyone beating the lake records for blue and channel catfish (76 and 50 pounds, respectively). LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout fishing is fair, with limits not uncommon but not easy either. Velveeta cheese edges Power Bait as best bait. A plant of 1,600 pounds Thursday has probably improved the bite. Catfish bite fair during the day, good at night. Top fish was an 11-pounder by Kyle Robinson, Long Beach, on a shrimp-Hog Wild combo at the inlet. Largemouth bass in full-spawn mode. Anglers are catching up to 40 per day on night crawlers and dark plastics.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--The first limits of trout in five years were caught in the past week. You guessed it: Power Bait was the top producer. Largemouth bass have perked up, with most being caught on crankbaits and plastic worms at 15-25 feet. Few fish over 3 pounds, though.

LAKE PERRIS--A 12-8 bass and an 11-2 bass were caught on Bass Trix lures. Several smaller bass biting on six-inch plastic worms.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Top bass was a 10-8 caught by Jack Ferguson, Laguna Beach, on a plastic worm at Sutherland. A 9-pounder was caught at Murray. The best bite, though, is at El Capitan, where the largest was a 6-pounder. A good crappie bite is also in progress at El Capitan, with white mini-jigs producing double-digit catches for many. Trout bites remain fair at Miramar, Murray and San Vicente.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Limits of pan-sized trout coming for most in less than two hours. Inflated night crawlers getting them fastest, but everything is working. Fish story: San Diego’s Joselito Camiling hooked what he thought was a lunker trout, but when he reeled it in he discovered that there were two small fish on his Rapala, one on each treble hook.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--20 anglers (1 boat): 100 red rockcod, 200 rockcod.

AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--10 anglers (1 boat): 15 red rockcod, 135 rockcod, 2 lingcod. (Patriot Sportfishing)--16 anglers (1 boat): 48 red snapper, 64 red rockcod, 16 rockfish, 21 lingcod.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--22 anglers (2 boats): 70 calico bass, 12 cabezon, 20 whitefish, 10 lingcod, 226 rockfish, 9 sheephead. (Hornet’s Landing)--3 anglers (1 boat): 7 calico bass, 12 sand bass, 1 halibut, 2 rockfish. 20 mackerel.
