Man, Son Survive Sierra Plane Crash
A man and his 3-year-old son survived the crash of their small plane, then used a broken piece of wing as a sled Sunday to reach a nearby road and safety.
The single-engine plane of Victor Marsh, 33, crashed on a Sierra Nevada peak Saturday as he was flying from Prescott, Ariz., to his home in Tracy, said Civil Air Patrol Major Wyn Selwyn.
Marsh, a former Air Force pilot, kept himself and the boy warm overnight and then started calling on a radio at dawn.
His calls were heard by Shane Lowe of nearby Lone Pine, who drove to the area as Marsh and his son slid to a road on the jury-rigged toboggan.
“The pilot’s survival skills and training really paid off,” said air patrol Lt. Col. James Goin.
