Council to Consider Ranch House Plan
The City Council is expected to decide Wednesday whether to allow industrial uses in the area surrounding the historic Camarillo Ranch House.
As a condition for approval of the industrial park, officials have required the developer to donate to the city the house, the barn and the 4.4 acres they sit on.
The Camarillo Planning Commission approved the zone change and industrial plan March 2, but required the project’s design to be compatible with the house.
The Dallas-based Vista Development Co. has been negotiating with descendants of Adolfo Camarillo, the city’s founder, to purchase the 1892 Queen Anne house at 3771 Mission Oaks Blvd.
The house, a large red barn and several outbuildings are part of a 67-acre site that has been a popular filming spot for 30 years.
The industrial park will include offices, restaurants and light-industrial or warehouse facilities.
Once in the hands of the city, the house would be assigned to a nonprofit group for restoration. The group also would oversee tours, filming, weddings, banquets and other special events at the house. One nonprofit group interested in taking over the Camarillo Ranch House is the Rancho Camarillo Historical Society, which so far has about lined up about $50,000 from corporate sponsors to begin the renovation.
