Pepperdine’s Walker Leads Southwestern by a Stroke

Pepperdine’s Andy Walker shot rounds of 72 and 69 Monday for a total of one-under-par 141 and the lead after two rounds of the Southwestern Collegiate Golf Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

Walker, seeking to become the second consecutive winner from Pepperdine, leads USC’s Charlie Woerner by a stroke. Paul Casey of Arizona State and Andy Miller of Brigham Young, son of former U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller, are at 143. Jason Gore won the tournament last year.

Arizona State has a 17-stroke lead over defending champion USC in the team competition. ASU shot a five-man total of 575. Pepperdine is tied for fourth place at 597 and Cal State Northridge, led by Anthony Marciano’s 76-70--146, is tied for eighth at 602.

The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. today.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Poly 5, Reseda 2--Host Reseda (4-4, 0-3) committed four errors in the seventh inning that led to four unearned runs in a Valley Pac-8 conference game, wasting an 11-strikeout performance by Leo Rosales (1-2).

Sal Trujillo earned the victory.

Poly improved to 5-1, 2-0.

North Hollywood 5, Van Nuys 1--Marcus Clenance (2-0) pitched a three-hitter for North Hollywood (5-2, 3-0) in a Valley Pac-8 game at Van Nuys (2-7-1, 0-2-1).

Grant 10, Canoga Park 2--Richard Martinez hit a grand slam in the sixth inning in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Billy Karz (1-2) struck out six in helping Grant (1-7, 1-2) win its first game of the season.

San Luis Obispo 4, Thousand Oaks 2--Dave Perry had two hits and a run batted in for Thousand Oaks, but the host Lancers (8-1) left 10 runners on base in a nonleague game.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Pepperdine 8, California 1--G.J. Raymundo hit a grand slam and the Waves (17-13) scored four unearned runs in the completion of a nonconference game that was suspended on Feb. 8 because of rain with the score tied, 0-0, in the top of the sixth inning.

It was the eighth home run of the season for Raymundo, who had five RBIs. Steve Schenewerk (3-3) pitched the final four innings, allowing no runs on three hits.

BOYS’ TENNIS

St. Bonaventure 15, Santa Paula 3--Mike Marquez at No. 1 singles and John Vigorita at No. 2 singles each swept their sets for St. Bonaventure (5-0) in a nonleague match at Santa Paula.

Rio Mesa 13, Camarillo 5--Quinn Borchard did not lose a game in three sets at No. 1 singles for Rio Mesa (8-0) in a nonleague match at Camarillo (2-4).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge 6, Northern Arizona 3--Isabella Peintner defeated Susana Wallin at No. 2 singles for her 10th consecutive victory to lead host Northridge (12-3) against the defending Big Sky Conference champions.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Littlerock d. Westlake, 15-7, 15-4, 15-7-- Chris Gorny had 14 kills and four aces, and Marc Mailander had 13 kills and four aces for the Lobos (5-0).

Crespi d. Glendale, 15-9, 15-11, 15-10--James Spratt had 10 kills and Kevin Scully had nine for host Crespi (5-1) in a nonleague match.

Matt Miller had 31 assists, four aces and six digs for Crespi.
