School Priorities

Supt. Ruben Zacarias may be taking action to improve education and provide air-conditioning for all schools, but the Los Angeles Unified School District board members and officials still operate on a “me-first” mentality.

Prairie Street School, adjacent to Cal State Northridge, has been closed for many years. It has been used by the university as a storage and parking facility.

I was pleasantly surprised to see new roofs, air-conditioning units, new lighting fixtures and other renovations in progress. I naturally assumed it was being prepared to provide much needed space for children in overcrowded schools and perhaps be available as a training school for CSUN. I assumed so, but that is not the case. It is to house administrative offices. According to the area cluster office, the “school” will be used, temporarily, by maintenance personnel.

Yes, although Zacarias is working toward improvements for the schoolchildren and promises to have all schools air-conditioned eventually, the administrators will get theirs first.
