AAUW Branch Gives 2 Camp Scholarships

Two junior high students were awarded scholarships by the American Assn. of University Women, Simi Valley Branch, to attend a math, science and computer camp at Stanford University.

Elise Haden from Hillside Junior High School and Katherine Kipp from Valley View Junior High were nominated by their schools, and then later selected from a field of 12 girls after group interviews.

California American Assn. of University Women’s “Tech Trek” will be held June 21-26.

Amgen Helps Assistance League Programs * The Amgen Foundation has given the Assistance League of Ventura County a $2,000 grant in support of its youth programs. The nonprofit organization operates a preschool for children with developmental delays, a Girls and Teen Club, after-school recreation activities and other projects.

Boys’ Basketball Team Gets $2,000 Donation * The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Paula received a $2,000 contribution from Southern California Edison’s Volunteer Incentive Program. The donation will pay for the eighth-grade boys’ traveling basketball team’s uniforms, travel and tournament expenses.

Oxnard Leader Named Statesman of Year * Oxnard Mayor Pro Tem Bedford Pinkard was honored as Statesman of the Year by Jack and Jill of America Inc. The honor recognizes Pinkard’s many years of service to the community, including his six years as a member of the City Council, and membership on the Citizens Advisory Committee of the California Youth Authority and Oxnard Union High School District Board of Trustees.

The national philanthropic organization was founded in Philadelphia in 1938 with a mission of “dedicating its resources to improving the quality of life for all children.”
