L.A.’s Best Doughnut

I loved seeing the sign from the old Helms Bakery pictured in the Jan. 25 issue (“Flour Power,” by Jim Heimann, So SoCal).

In the early 1960s, when I was 4 and 5 years old, I would run out of the house to meet the Helms Bakery truck as it came down our street. It was full of fresh baked goods, and to this day, the best doughnut I ever had was the crumb doughnut from Helms. If anyone ever duplicates it, I’d certainly like to know about it.
