Notre Dame, Alemany to Duel for Title

Tommy Barber of Notre Dame High shot a two-over-par 35 to lead the Knights to a 189-196 victory over St. Francis Thursday at Chevy Chase Country Club, and set up a Mission League title showdown with Alemany on Wednesday.

Notre Dame (20-3, 14-1) also got a solid round from Kevin Coghlan (36). Daniel Imm of St. Francis (14-6, 8-3) tied Barber as medalist. Barber, a sophomore, was one-under-par on the ninth tee before putting two shots out of bounds en route to a triple-bogey seven.

Flintridge Sacred Heart shot 299 in the three-way match.

In other golf matches:

Alemany 189, Loyola 200--Brian Woolf had two birdies and a bogey en route to a one-under-par 34 at Porter Valley Country Club to help the Indians stay tied for first in the Mission League.

Anthony Harju shot 36 and Krystal Shearer had a 38 for the Indians (12-3, 12-1).

Flintridge Prep 199, Montclair Prep 225--Russell Surber shot a one-under-par 35 for the Rebels (17-2, 10-1) in a Prep League victory at Hansen Dam.

Frontier League tournament--A Calabasas mishap allowed Nordhoff to move into first place after shooting 377 at Calabasas Country Club in the second of four rounds.

Calabasas appeared to have shot a 372, but sophomore Aaron Levine, the league runner-up a year ago, signed for a 78 when he actually shot 79 and was disqualified. The Coyotes had to take Jon Herson’s 89, for a team total of 383, giving Nordhoff a 746-748 lead in the league race.

Defending league champion Jon Ohye of Calabasas shot one-over-par 71 and leads the individual race with 142 strokes. Younger brother Justin shot two-under-par 69 for the day’s low round.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Prep d. Cathedral, 15-3, 15-11, 15-10--Craig Revell had 33 kills for the Rebels (13-2, 11-1), who tied Cathedral for the Santa Fe League lead with two matches left.

Campbell Hall d. L.A. Baptist, 15-2, 15-8, 15-13--Larry Cole had 11 kills and five blocks for the Vikings (12-1, 9-0) in an Alpha League victory at Campbell Hall.

La Salle d. Bell-Jeff, 15-11, 15-13, 6-15, 15-9--Sean Doyle had 15 kills and George Hakopian had 21 assists and 13 digs but the Guards (0-12, 0-12) fell in a Santa Fe League match at Bell-Jeff.

Santa Barbara d. Buena, 15-12, 15-3, 15-7--Scott Wightman had 10 kills for the Bulldogs, who lost a Channel League match at Buena.

Newbury Park d. Thousand Oaks, 15-10, 13-15, 15-10, 15-0--Mark Davis had 16 kills, seven aces and six blocks for the Panthers (10-4, 9-3) in a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Collin McKeown had 18 kills and Sterling Hannemann added 16 for the Panthers.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Crespi 11, Notre Dame 7--Mike Smith swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and Carlos Gil and Ray Purwadihardja swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for the Celts (11-6, 6-5) in a Mission League victory at Studio City Tennis Center.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Harvard-Westlake 62, Notre Dame 28--Mike Crosby won the 200 individual medley in 2:08.13 and freshman Phil Song swam 52.03 in the 100 freestyle to help the Wolverines (5-0, 5-0) clinch their first Mission League championship in seven years.

DIVING

Marmonte League Championships--Thousand Oaks’ Alexis Sowa scored 530.55 points to set a Marmonte League 11-dive record at the Rancho Simi Pool. Sowa led a group of six girls to qualify for the Southern Section Division I prelims. Seven boys also qualified.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Harvard-Westlake 89, Louisville 36--The Wolverines clinched their first Mission League title since joining the league in 1993 behind a triple victory by Natalie Ostroff, who set a school record in the high jump by clearing 5 feet 5 inches at Harvard-Westlake.

Ostroff jumped 16-4 in the long jump and 31-4 in the triple jump. Becky Rauth set a school record in the 100 high hurdles in 15.0 seconds and won the 200 in 26.1.

Canyon 97, Saugus 49--Emma Barker won three events and Lauren Fleshman won two for the victorious Cowboys in the Foothill League meet at Canyon.

Barker cleared 5 feet in the high jump and spanned 15-4 in the long jump and 31-5 in the triple jump.

Fleshman won the 800 in 2:31.9 and the 1,600 in 5:29.7 to help Canyon (7-0, 5-0) clinch the league title.

Flintridge Sacred Heart 78, Chaminade 53--Jessica Reyes won the 100 meters in 13.7, the high jump at 4-8 and the long jump at 14-5 1/2 for Flintridge Sacred Heart (2-2, 2-2) in a Mission League meet at St. Francis.

Hart 101, Burbank 28--Leigh Carlson won four events and set a school record with a mark of 10-0 in the pole vault in a Foothill League meet at College of the Canyons.

Carlson also won the long jump, high jump and triple jump for Hart (6-1, 4-1).

BOYS’ TRACK

Canyon 110, Saugus 25--Aaron Thompson won three events to pace the Cowboys to victory in the Foothill League meet at Canyon.

Thompson clocked 16.0 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and 43.2 in the 300 intermediates and cleared 6-4 in the high jump as Canyon (6-1, 5-0) clinched the league title.
