A 27-year-old man was killed and his male passenger injured over the weekend when their car smashed into a stalled utility truck on the Antelope Valley Freeway, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The passenger was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition Sunday.

Mechanical problems caused a Southern California Edison truck to stall in the right southbound lane at Shadow Pines Boulevard on Saturday night, said CHP spokesman Gary Butler.

As other vehicles on the two-lane highway slowed to avoid the truck, a 1989 Ford Escort traveling on the left changed lanes. Attempting to pass traffic, the car crashed into the rear of the truck at 9:35 p.m., Butler said.

The Lake Los Angeles driver died at the accident scene from massive head and back injuries, Butler said. The CHP did not release the identity of the two victims, pending notification of relatives.

The accident shut down the southbound lanes for nearly four hours as traffic was diverted onto surface streets.
