McGrath to Run Despite Fellowship
Rosalind McGrath, the only Democrat in the race to replace state Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard), said Monday she will remain a candidate despite being awarded a fellowship to study in England.
“I’m staying in the race; that’s all I have to say right now,” McGrath said in a brief interview, declining to elaborate.
The elementary school teacher said Friday she was weighing whether to continue her bid for the 37th Assembly District seat, which Takasugi must vacate due to term limits, after learning she had received the fellowship. Her departure would have left the Democratic Party with no challengers for the seat, which extends from Oxnard and Camarillo to Thousand Oaks.
Seven candidates are vying to replace Takasugi. Other than McGrath, the candidates are Republicans John P. Lane, a fraud investigator; Jere Robings, a taxpayer advocate; Toni Young, a Port Hueneme councilwoman; Rich Sybert, a toy-company executive; Tony Strickland, a legislative aide; and Reform Party candidate Michael Farris, a scientist.
