A driver allegedly attempting to evade police in a stolen car crashed into an apartment building early Friday, police said.

The chase began after officers said they spotted the driver running a stop sign at Algonquin and Pearce streets about 3:30 a.m., Huntington Beach Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said.

While driving the stolen Nissan Maxima at about 35 mph, the driver and a male passenger jumped out of the car before it crashed into the garage door of a unit on the 16600 block of Barefoot Circle, police said.

“I’m sure a lot of people were wakened up,” Ochoa said.

Officers arrested the driver, identified as David Murguia Adame, 24, of Huntington Beach, and booked him into the city jail on suspicion of grand theft auto, possession of stolen property, evading arrest and a parole hold.

Officers, who surrounded the area and called in a police dog, couldn’t find the passenger, Ochoa said.
