A 20-year-old motorist was killed and his passenger wounded when shots were fired from another vehicle when the victim’s car stopped at a traffic light Sunday morning, police said.

The victim, who was not identified pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead on arrival at Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills.

His passenger, a 21-year-old man, was treated and released, said a nursing supervisor.

Police said patrol officers were responding to an automobile accident at Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Sherman Way at 1:50 a.m. when they realized that the occupants had been shot.

Investigators discovered that a dark sport utility-type vehicle had pulled up along the driver’s side of the victim’s car when it was at a stoplight, heading west on Sherman Way, police said.

The passenger in the other vehicle fired several shots at the victim, hitting the driver in the upper torso, police said.

After being shot, the driver accelerated his car, lost control and slammed into a curb, police said.
