A 21-year-old man was stabbed to death Sunday at a hot dog stand after two assailants asked for his gang affiliation, authorities said.

Steven Cory Redden of North Hollywood was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, LAPD Det. Mike Coffey said.

Police said the stabbing occurred after 4 p.m. in the 12100 block of Magnolia Avenue near Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

Redden and a 17-year-old male friend were standing in line when two men approached and asked them where they were from, Coffey said. During an argument that followed, one stabbed Redden in the upper torso.

The assailants were last seen driving away south on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in a small red car, authorities said.

Coffey said the victim and his friend were not gang members.
