Federal Funds to Help Fund Hillside Study

With two homes unfit for occupation and several others threatened by unstable slopes near Crown Valley Elementary School, city officials will use federal block grant money to help assess the potential for future disasters.

City Manager Tim Casey said that the federal program, which helps low- and moderate-income people keep up with maintenance on their homes, also allows funds to be spent in emergencies.

The city will earmark about $160,000 over the next two years to find a solution to the eroding hillside.

About 10 homeowners pooled their resources for a preliminary report on the hillside, but needed about $30,000 for a more comprehensive survey.

Two residences on Vista Plaza Drive have been evacuated for months since the slope underneath began to move.

“Those two houses are literally cracking up,” said Casey, “right through the flooring and the foundation.”

Unlike the recent landslide that destroyed seven homes, this neighborhood was built decades ago and the developers are no longer in business, Casey said.
