Multimedia Literacy Program Is OKd
A high-tech solution to a decidedly low-tech problem was approved by the City Council, which has authorized the city library to electronically hook up to an adult literacy program.
A multimedia program called LiteracyLink uses television, teleconferencing and the Internet to teach adults how to read. It will be offered at the Mission Viejo Library by late June.
“This is very high-tech,” head librarian Valerie Meyer said. “But just because a person can’t read doesn’t necessarily mean they have a fear of technology.”
The library will be partnered with Los Angeles Public Broadcasting Service station KCET, which invited Mission Viejo to participate because of its new video-conferencing equipment.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and will be held in four other locations in Southern California and other sites across the country. Although video-based, LiteracyLink also uses live instructors.
