Warehouse Well-Stocked With Slightly Used Office Supplies

Anyone driving down Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood during the week has undoubtedly seen the collection of chairs, file cabinets and general office equipment in front of Advanced Liquidators.
If you’re furnishing an office or den, a stop here could save you big bucks. You never know what you’re going to find in the way of used furniture in this warehouse.
There’s a big supply of file cabinets, many of them probably tossed when computers took over.
A nearly perfect, five-drawer vertical file that would sell for $500 if new was tagged at $150. Better yet, there were five-drawer, 42-inch lateral file cabinets that at one time sold for $1,300 but have stickers that read $350.
For 15 years, owner Jerry Goldman has been buying, selling and trading office furniture, restaurant fixtures, medical and dental products, plus a variety of equipment and machine parts.
For years, all of the desks, bookcases and file cabinets in my own office came from Advanced Liquidators.
I even placed a handsome entertainment center on consignment here several years ago.
For someone just furnishing a first office, this source can be a windfall.
Obviously, you’re going to save the most money by buying used, but there is a good inventory of new furnishings as well, and the discounts go up to 75% off list price.
Goldman purchases from local manufacturers to keep costs down and to ensure quick delivery. A new multiperformance task chair--it tilts up, down and sideways--has a retail price of $615 but is tagged here at $319.
Modular panels that sell at some stores for $200 sell for $90.
If a customer wants to buy a typewriter (the most popular IBM Selectrics range from $125 to $150), management will have its typewriter expert get it shipshape.
My favorite buys were the reconditioned Herman Miller and Knoll chairs at $150--quite a deal when you consider they sell new for $800 to $1,000.
