Gossip columnists at the Boston Herald reported details Wednesday of what they call the plot of tonight’s final “Seinfeld” episode.

(For those who would still like to remain in the dark about the episode, read no further.)

Laura Raposa and Gayle Fee reported that the finale would find the four main characters--Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine--in jail after failing to report a carjacking they had witnessed. According to the account, the friends are put on trial.

Among guest stars appearing as character witnesses were Teri Hatcher (who previously had played a girlfriend of Jerry’s), former New York Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez, and Jerry Stiller and Estelle Harris (who play George’s parents).

The story did not reveal how the episode ends. “We don’t really know,” said Fee, who said she got her information from a source who had signed a confidentiality agreement not to disclose specifics about the show.

A spokesperson for NBC declined to comment on the Herald article, but a source close to the show said the story seemed to have taken a few details that were known about the show “and elaborated on them.”

Dozens of angry readers complained to the Herald about the report.

“A lot of people are really mad at us, saying we’ve ruined their lives,” Fee said. “But we did get one call from a reader who said, ‘I loved that you ruined it for these losers who are planning their week around this show.’ ”

Fee noted that the article carried an advisory warning readers who did not want to have the episode spoiled.

When asked if the source who supplied the information was reliable, Fee laughed loudly. “We hope!” she said.
