Shopping Center’s Remake Plan Delayed

Share

The Planning Commission recently delayed a decision on redevelopment plans for the Seacliff Shopping Center, after listening to public concerns for nearly 2 1/2 hours.

The commission was to have decided on plans by Shea Properties to demolish the mall, at Main Street and Yorktown Avenue, and build a larger, more modern structure that would double the existing retail space.

Some residents said they are concerned about the future of the existing tenants and the project’s overall impact on the neighborhood.

The commission requested that Shea Properties return with specific plans for the expanded mall and an outline of how tenants will either be relocated or moved back into the new center.

The shopping center also is home to a collection of bird-themed artworks that will be removed and relocated to several city sites. The new mall is expected to be built by next year.

The commission will review the matter later this month.
