Charles Noel Waddell; USC Nuclear Physicist

Charles Noel Waddell, 75, nuclear physicist who taught and performed research at USC. A national expert on nuclear and solid-state physics, Waddell was born in Omaha and studied briefly at the University of Omaha before serving in the Navy during World War II. He later earned a bachelor’s and doctorate in physics at UC Berkeley, where he worked for many years in its radiation laboratory. Waddell joined the USC faculty in 1958 and worked with its linear accelerator, UCLA’s cyclotron and the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He also conducted materials science research at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington for several summers. Waddell retired in 1990. On April 21 in Torrance of cancer.
