Mothers’ Peace March Focuses on Education

To demonstrate an ongoing commitment to rid their community of violence, North Hills residents will march this morning through the streets of North Hills in the third annual Mothers’ March for Peace.

Organized by Neighbors United Against Violence, a group of mothers who reside in North Hills, the two-hour event begins at 10 a.m. and includes programs on domestic violence, anger management, parenting skills and nonviolent communications, said Juan Granados, a consultant to the group.

“It’s a march for peace in the community with the focus on education instead of incarceration as a means of preventing violence,” said Granados, who is also a counselor and mediator for New Directions For Youth, a Van Nuys-based youth organization and co-organizer of the march.

The event is expected to attract to 500 residents, Granados said.

“The community is united in taking a stand against violence,” he said. “That’s why the folks are getting together.”

The march will leave at 10 a.m. from Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 15444 Nordhoff St., North Hills, proceed east on Nordhoff Street, south on Sepulveda Boulevard, west on Parthenia Street, north on Orion Avenue and east on Nordhoff, back to the church.
