Gallegly Bill Proposes Teacher Tax Credits

A new bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly would give school teachers tax credits toward continuing education.

The Simi Valley Republican said his Teacher Investment and Enhancement Act would offer up to a $4,000 annual tax credit to secondary school teachers looking to improve their knowledge in the subject they teach.

“America has some of the best and most dedicated teachers,” Gallegly said in a news release. “But many teachers need more intensive training in the subject matter they teach. Offering more education for teachers is an investment in our children and our teachers.”

Gallegly cites U.S. Department of Education studies showing that nearly one-third of math teachers and half of physical science teachers did not major in their subject in college or even take upper-division courses in those subjects.

“We must set higher expectations for all teachers if we want better results from students,” Gallegly said. “While it’s important to know how to teach, it is equally important to know what you are teaching.”
