The San Fernando Valley Literacy Council needs volunteers to help adults improve their reading and writing skills. Tutor training will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church, 15435 Rayen St., North Hills. For more information, call (818) 893-5216.

Burbank’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers 55 and older who are interested in becoming involved in a citizens patrol program. Each applicant will be required to pass a background check and attend a 30-hour training academy. The Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge is looking for volunteers to be ushers, help publicize events and organize special programs and activities. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Jeopardy program, which aims to deter at-risk youths from engaging in gang activities, needs volunteers to coach boxing, basketball and hockey and to teach dance and martial arts.
