Proposition 220

Share

Your May 17 editorial’s endorsement of Proposition 220, the state ballot initiative that would essentially eliminate the municipal court system as we know it today in favor of a more centrally controlled superior court system, failed to address the key issue in the debate. That issue is local control.

There is no empirical evidence to support the idea that a rigid, centrally controlled court system will improve the performance of our currently established superior and municipal courts.

In Webster’s dictionary, the word municipal is defined as “having local self-government” and “restricted to one locality.” A yes vote on Proposition 220 will take away our local control of the court system.
