Ex-Prison Guard May Face Death for N.Y. Killings
From Associated Press
NEW YORK —
A former prison guard once praised as a hero for saving a fellow officer has become the first person convicted under New York’s 3-year-old death penalty law.
Darrel K. Harris was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder for killing three people in a botched holdup of an illegal Brooklyn social club in December 1996.
The penalty phase of the trial, to decide whether Harris should be sentenced to death by injection or to life in prison without parole, is set for next week.
