New Old Towne Lights to Serve as Invitation

Share

Experts studying renovations to Old Towne recommended a vital element to bring some night life to the mile-square area: Let there be lights.

Acorn-shaped lights, to be specific.

City Council members last week agreed and unanimously approved new lights that will replace many of the plain, utilitarian poles on the residential streets.

About 125 new street lights will be added to neighborhoods surrounding the plaza, helping to make Old Towne safer and more inviting at night, according to the plan.

The new lights, which have acorn-shaped globes, are already prevalent up and down Glassell Street and Chapman Avenue, the two streets that feed into the circle.

The lights will replicate the original fixtures, and some of the posts will have jutting arms with hanging acorn globes.

Work on the northeast and northwest areas of Old Towne probably will begin in late summer, said Public Works Director Harry Thomas of the $400,000 project. Construction should take about four months.

The rest of the renovation will be done as the budget permits.
