Funds OKd to Widen Warner Ave. Overpass

Share

Fountain Valley plans to widen the Warner Avenue overpass from four to six lanes to accommodate more traffic and allow safer merging to and from the San Diego Freeway.

Vehicles exiting the freeway at Warner must now stop and then merge with those that are traveling as fast as 45 mph.

With only a few feet to merge, the area has been the scene of several accidents, according to a city staff report.

Widening the bridge should eliminate the bottleneck on Warner Avenue by adding lanes for cars entering and exiting the freeway.

City Council members approved $2.85 million for the work Tuesday. Funds will come from Measure M sales tax revenue and a Caltrans grant.

Bids for the work were about 30% higher than initial estimates but city staff members said they underestimated the costs.

The price for the work is comparable to a similar project in Costa Mesa that widened the Bristol Street crossing.
