Choosing Schools

Re: “Fewer Seats Up For Grabs at Choice Public Schools,” April 26.

As a proponent of open enrollment and as one who chose Patrick Henry Middle School, I am insulted by the lack of integrity displayed in Megan Garvey’s article. Once again, The Times takes aim on the Los Angeles Unified School District and the casualty is the reputation of the finest middle school in LAUSD, Patrick Henry. However, journalistic balance and responsibility should reflect that this is one parent’s opinion. My opinion is based on investigation, interviews and visits made to multiple schools regarding what programs, philosophies, classroom groupings, teaching methods, etc. are utilized and, more importantly, what I deem appropriate and best for my child. To choose a school based on curbside appeal is tantamount to choosing a husband or wife just because he / she is cute.
