Assembly Hopeful Fennell Back in Race After Illness

Marie H. Fennell, who had withdrawn from the 67th Assembly District primary, said Wednesday that she is again an active candidate.

Fennell, who serves on the county Democratic Central Committee, had dropped out of the June 2 race for health reasons, she said, but those are now resolved. Her name had not been removed from the ballot.

Fennell, a retired social worker, also complained that she had been pressured by Democratic Party officials to not run against Rima Nashashibi, an insurance customer representative who lives in Seal Beach. Nashashibi received the endorsement of the state party at its March convention in Los Angeles.

Ray Cordova, regional director of the state Democratic Party, said party officials never sought to get Fennell out of the race. “We don’t work that way,” he said.

Seeking reelection in the district is Assemblyman Scott Baugh (R-Huntington Beach). He is running against five other Republicans in the coastal Orange County district.
