Strawberry Board Awards Scholarships

Share

In recognition of the countless hours field workers spent on the state’s bumper crop of strawberries this year, the California Strawberry Commission has selected its Class of 1998 scholarship winners.

The commission selected nine graduating seniors from the Oxnard area--whose parents are field workers--to receive between $400 and $1,000 for college or other higher learning.

The scholarships will be formally presented during an awards luncheon June 16 at the Oxnard Hilton, 600 Esplanade Drive.

This year’s winners are: Manuel Alvarez Jr., Araceli Flores, Silvia Hernandez and Rigoberto Rivera of Channel Islands High School; Juan Camacho and Leticia Cazares from Rio Mesa High School; Bertha Flores and Beatrice Flores of Camarillo High School, and Maribel Reyes from Hueneme High School.

The strawberry commission’s scholarship program was established in 1995 to recognize the academic achievements of field workers’ children.

Winners are encouraged to reapply to the commission for continued funding.
