Mall to Be Closed for 9-Month Renovation

The new owners of the Shops at Palos Verdes plan to close the mall for nine months next year while they remodel the retail center and make room for an adjacent pedestrian promenade, Rolling Hills Estates city officials said.

City Manager Doug Prichard said the mall will close in February for about nine months while Cousins Properties tears off the roof to create an open-air promenade. Prichard said Cousins officials had hoped to keep the mall open during construction, but decided the safest and most efficient way to handle the remodeling was to close the mall.

Prichard said the city’s Economic Development Commission has directed the city staff to help mall tenants find new or temporary locations in the city’s commercial district. Mall officials could not be reached for comment.

Cousins bought the ailing mall from longtime owner Ron Florance earlier this year and plans to spend $65 million on the renovation and the outdoor plaza, to be called the Avenue of the Peninsula.
