Board Approves PAL Camps for Students
Students involved in their school Peer Assistance Leadership, or PAL, program will participate in three-day camping trips this summer.
The trips at Camp Ta Ta Pochon in the San Bernardino Mountains, approved on a 3-1 vote of the Fullerton School District board, aim to teach the students to be better leaders on campus. Thirty pupils--six from Acacia Elementary School, 12 from Orangethorpe Elementary and 12 from Nicolas Junior High--will participate. Several teachers will accompany the students.
Trustees praised the highly regarded PAL program, which is designed to encourage friendships and a drug-free lifestyle. The students also will be taught about issues facing teens and how to deal with those issues.
Trustee Kim Ann Guth, who cast the lone vote against the camping trips, called the program “elitist” and inappropriate for elementary school children.
The camps will cost the district $7,875.
