The Race For Governor

The marquee race for governor of California attracted four major candidates--and 17 in all. Before it is over, Democrats Al Checchi, Gray Davis and Jane Harman and Republican Dan Lungren will have spent tens of millions of dollars, much of it on television advertising designed to introduce themselves to voters and define their opponents.

One Democrat will survive the primary to face Lungren--who is running without major opposition--in the November general election.

For a look at where the major gubernatorial candidates stand on the key issues of the primary campaign, and a look at the rest of the field, see Page B2.
